The Inevitability of Industry Transformation in the Digital Age

In the era of digitalization, industry transformation has become an inevitable trend, and the rise of 5G technology offers new opportunities in this regard. Today, we are exploring a significant milestone event - the "5G Vertical Industry Applications Promotion Team" and how it is impacting the transformation of traditional industries.

The Convergence of Industry, Government, and Academia

Since the inception of the "AI Plan," industry enhancement has been one of its key directions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is recognized as an excellent strategy to achieve this goal, but the key question is how to implement it effectively. Before the launch of the "AI Plan," in 2018, Donghai University took the initiative by introducing the Taiwan AI Academy's (AIA) executive program. The aim was to establish connections with central enterprises and strengthen local capabilities. They also signed a direct agreement with AWS headquarters to establish Taiwan's first "Cloud Innovation Academy," bridging international top-notch technology and innovative thinking.

The manufacturing industry has long been overlooked, with the most common association being automotive sheet metal. However, the scope of sheet metal application extends far beyond that, supporting high-tech industries and everyday life, contributing to an industry worth over 2 trillion NT dollars, with nearly 4,000 companies across Taiwan and a total production value exceeding 200 billion NT dollars, ranking among the top five globally.

However, the sheet metal industry faces a series of challenges, including small-scale operations, lengthy training periods, high customization, and a lack of digitization. To address these challenges, the sheet metal industry needs a comprehensive transformation plan.

Driving Vertical Applications

In this transformation process, becoming a part of the "5G Vertical Industry Applications Promotion Team" in January 2023 marks a significant milestone.

Diffusion of Value Innovation

The sheet metal industry has unique characteristics, such as a high degree of cluster effect and product diversity. The goal of the Sheet Metal National Team is to leverage these advantages by rapidly introducing various sheet metal factories through a software framework. This capability has been demonstrated successfully under the Economic Ministry's Caring Project and SMB/SMU initiatives (expanding from one to fifteen factories). This aligns with the second phase of the National Development Council's 5G Vertical Industry Applications initiative, aiming to achieve the landing and diffusion of 5G applications through demonstrations by three selected factories.

The Blueprint of the Sheet Metal Manufacturing Cloud

This transformation process involves a journey from individual entities to the entire industry, from a single machine to an entire factory, and further to cross-factory implementation, replication, and diffusion. It is an ongoing process that continually sketches the blueprint of traditional industry digital transformation.

Throughout this journey, we see collaboration between industry, government, and academia, driving the transformation of traditional industries. With the widespread adoption of 5G technology, we can anticipate that this story will continue to evolve, injecting more vitality into Taiwan's industrial transformation and having a profound impact on global industries.
